The S&P 500 closed up 0.46 percent and the Dow gained 0.56 percent. The Nasdaq 100 added 0.24 percent and the Russell 2000 rose 1.18 percent. Premarket, the S&P 500 is up 0.17 percent, the Nasdaq 100 is up 0.08 percent and the Dow is up 0.46 percent. Premarket prices for the Russell 2000 are not in yet. The structure score for the S&P 500 is 49, labeled Balanced. The medium trend is still up, but the index sits in the lower half of its recent range after a modest gap higher. Expect two-sided trading rather than a clear trend at the open.

The Fed's Beige Book said economic activity increased modestly since early July, with employment rising very slightly and prices up moderately in eight districts. Factory orders rose 0.9 percent in July, above the 0.7 percent estimate. President Trump said the United States took out an Iranian rocket designed to drop mines and that a renewed campaign will not continue for too long. In company news, HPE beat earnings on AI server demand, following Dell. Nvidia remains the most covered stock, with reports on its financing ties to OpenAI and large investors trimming positions.
