Stocks slip premarket as Trump trade threats and Ukraine talks dominate

Tone

The S&P 500 closed down 0.53 percent and the Dow lost 1.12 percent. The Nasdaq 100 barely moved and the Russell 2000 fell 0.42 percent. Premarket, all four are lower: the S&P 500 is down 0.4 percent, the Nasdaq 100 down 0.66 percent, the Dow down 0.73 percent and the Russell 2000 down 0.59 percent. The structure score for the S&P 500 is 36, leaning bearish. The medium trend is still up, but the index sits near the lower half of its recent range and is gapping down today, so the near-term picture is the weaker one.

The main market stories are political. President Trump said he is directing the GSA to remove Canadian-origin products from federal procurement schedules unless Canada restores reciprocity, a new trade friction. He also spoke by phone with President Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, and the Kremlin called the conversation constructive. A separate report noted his approval rating has fallen. On the economy, the Conference Board's Employment Trends Index rose to 108.53 from 107.71. Among companies, Qualcomm jumped on a deal with Amazon to develop AI data center chips, and Amazon sold its first sterling bonds in a four-part offering.
