Premarket price against the prior close, 15-minute delayed, from all US exchanges.

Tech led the selloff and is leading this morning's rebound.

Tone

The S&P 500 fell 1.09% yesterday and the Nasdaq 100 fell 2.52%. Premarket, tech is rebounding: the Nasdaq 100 is up 1.30%, the S&P 500 up 0.51%, the Dow 0.18% lower. The S&P 500 structure score is 55, balanced: the longer trend is still upward, but the short-term picture is weak and the index sits near the bottom of its recent range. Neither side is in control.

Scott Bessent linked September inflation to an energy shock. Two warnings circulated: a $1.99 trillion deficit has pushed interest payments above defense spending, and Michael Burry sees 15 to 20 years of poor real returns. Nvidia's Jensen Huang addressed whether AI companies can generate enough revenue to continue the build-out, a question central to tech valuations.

No economic releases today. Fifth Third reports before the open. Steel Dynamics and several regional banks, including Zions and Western Alliance, report after the close.

After the close

Stocks closed higher as technology and consumer shares led the gains.

No call

What happened

The S&P 500 rose 0.43% and the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.2%. The Dow slipped 0.02% and the Russell 2000 added 0.31%. Eight of the eleven sectors closed lower, so the advance was concentrated in a few large groups.

Consumer discretionary rose 1.77% and technology gained 1.38%. Utilities fell 1.98% and real estate lost 1.2%; today's coverage offers no clear cause for those declines. Among the day's largest movers, Silence Therapeutics jumped 125.6% and Cleveland-Cliffs rose 16.2%. Amazon climbed 5% after saying its AI chips will work with a popular coding language. Almonty Industries fell 10.3%, and ImmunityBio and Ocular Therapeutix each lost about 8.3%.

One report said Nasdaq 100 stocks added nearly $500 billion in value as chip stocks tried to snap a rout, which supports the technology move. Chip news was heavy through the day, including Nvidia's record quantum computing simulation and continued coverage of its large buyback. After the close, Steel Dynamics, W.R. Berkley, Crown Holdings, AGNC Investment and regional banks including Zions and Western Alliance report earnings.

Against this morning

This morning's brief followed a selloff led by technology and said technology was leading a rebound, but its balanced score meant it made no directional call. The code therefore records no_call, whatever the market did. The session stayed consistent with the rebound it described: technology led the gainers again and the Nasdaq 100 rose 1.2%, while the S&P 500 added 0.43%.
