Premarket price against the prior close, 15-minute delayed, from all US exchanges.

Stocks closed higher and hold premarket gains as the Fed meets.

Tone

All four indexes closed higher: the Nasdaq 100 1.12 percent, the S&P 500 0.71 percent, the Dow 0.32 percent, the Russell 2000 0.45 percent. Premarket, all four are higher, the S&P 500 up 0.37 percent. The S&P 500 scores 54, a Balanced structure: the medium-term trend is up, but the index sits below its short-term average, in the lower half of its recent range. The medium-term uptrend is the bigger picture.

The Fed begins a two-day meeting today, the main market-wide story. Reuters reports the US and Canada are working on a deal to ease tariffs on Canadian steel and auto imports. Microsoft's offer of buyouts to around 60,000 employees drew the widest company coverage. Big Tech earnings are on deck, with more to watch than AI spending.

No economic releases are listed today. Coca-Cola, Boeing and Novartis report before the open; Visa and Seagate after the close.

After the close

Nasdaq 100 led stocks higher while energy shares fell sharply.

No direction

What happened

The S&P 500 rose 0.58 percent. The Nasdaq 100 gained 1.28 percent and the Russell 2000 added 1.17 percent. The Dow was nearly unchanged, up 0.03 percent.

Technology led all sectors with a 1.7 percent gain, and consumer discretionary rose 1.03 percent. Energy fell 2.02 percent, the largest decline, with consumer staples and real estate also lower. Communication Services, the sector that includes Meta, slipped 0.26 percent. Among individual stocks, Enovix gained 26.5 percent, Braskem 25.5 percent and JetBlue 18.5 percent, while Boeing fell 10.8 percent and Snap lost 4.6 percent. The day's news offers no explanation for these moves.

The most widely carried story was Nvidia's planned $3 billion investment in Meta's equity offering, alongside reports that Meta expanded AI infrastructure partnerships with Nvidia and AMD. Washington coverage included talks over Russian oil deals for US oil majors and reported plans to relax methane rules for oil firms. None of these stories clearly explains the technology sector's gain. A report describing the worst day for refiner stocks since the tariff shock was the closest item to energy's decline, but the connection is not established. Visa, Seagate Technology and Waste Management were scheduled to report results after the close.

Against this morning

This morning's brief described stocks holding premarket gains but, with a balanced structure score of 54, made no directional call. The verdict no_call reflects that: with no call made, there was nothing to match or miss. The session's gain, led by technology, therefore stands apart from the morning read rather than confirming or reversing it.
