Premarket price against the prior close, 15-minute delayed, from all US exchanges.

Alphabet's disappointing report drags tech lower after the Fed holds rates.

Tone

The indexes closed higher yesterday, but premarket prices point lower, led by a 1.21 percent drop in the Nasdaq 100. The Russell 2000 is slightly higher. The structure score of 68, leaning bullish, means the S&P 500's trend and range position still lean supportive, with the lower premarket start holding the score down. Tech is the weak spot this morning; the trend behind the score is the bigger picture.

The Fed left rates unchanged, and Chair Warsh called the economy strong while acknowledging tighter financial conditions. Alphabet's earnings disappointed, with coverage citing concerns about AI spending. Alphabet is dragging software stocks lower premarket, while Microsoft rises ahead of its own report after the close.

At 8:30, the government releases Gross Domestic Product and Personal Income and Outlays. Eli Lilly, Mastercard, Merck and Caterpillar report before the open. Amazon and Intel follow after the close.

After the close

Alphabet's earnings drop dragged tech lower, but most sectors and small caps rose.

Missed

What happened

The S&P 500 fell 0.36% and the Dow fell 0.36%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 1.4%. The Russell 2000 rose 0.96%, the only one of the four to close higher. The cause of the gain in small caps is not clear.

Communication Services fell 1.91% and Technology fell 1.22%. Every other sector rose, led by Health Care at 2.39%, Real Estate at 2.23% and Utilities at 1.52%. Bausch Health gained 27.8% and Teladoc Health gained 26.8%. IOVANCE Biotherapeutics lost 35.7%, ServiceNow lost 30.1% and Marvell Technology lost 15.2%. Today's coverage did not explain these moves.

Alphabet led the tech weakness. Its stock fell 12% as coverage tied the drop to AI pressure on its search business, and analysts cut ratings and price targets after the report. Other stories linked the sector's slide to earnings that raised concerns about AI spending. Microsoft went the other way, up 4% after cloud growth drove an earnings and revenue beat. Amazon, Intel and Sandisk report after the close.

Against this morning

This morning's brief leaned bullish, with a structure score of 68, and its headline flagged Alphabet's disappointing report dragging tech lower after the Fed held rates. The tech warning proved accurate: the Nasdaq 100 fell 1.4% and Communication Services was the weakest sector. The bullish lean did not hold. The S&P 500 closed lower, the other way from the call, so the verdict is missed.
