Premarket price against the prior close, 15-minute delayed, from all US exchanges.

Nasdaq led a sharp selloff; futures point higher before Apple and Palantir earnings.

Tone

The S&P 500 fell 1.8%, the Nasdaq 100 3.5%, the Dow 1.1% and the Russell 2000 1.6%. Premarket, all four are up between 0.4% and 0.6%. The S&P 500 structure score is 51, Balanced: the medium-term uptrend is intact, but the short-term trend is down and the index sits near the bottom of its recent range. The longer trend is the bigger picture, but neither side is in control.

Commentary ties the premarket rise to Apple and Palantir earnings due after the close. President Trump said the US is receiving millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil and threatened to veto everything if Democrats win the midterms. Apple reports at what coverage calls a critical time for Big Tech. Amazon reported record operating profit after the selloff.

No economic releases today. Marriott, Estee Lauder, Entergy and IDEXX report before the open; Apple, Palantir and Vertex follow after the close.

After the close

The Dow rose and most sectors gained while energy and technology slid.

No direction

What happened

The S&P 500 fell 0.49% and the Nasdaq 100 lost 1.35%. The Dow rose 0.44% and the Russell 2000 slipped 0.06%. The gap reflects energy and technology, which posted the two largest sector declines.

Energy dropped 3.91% and technology fell 2.92%. News flow centered on Iran. President Trump said he is in no rush to decide whether to resume strikes and that Iran wants to make a deal, and Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran to discuss a draft agreement. A market recap tied the day's stock gains and oil's slide to those peace hopes. Eight of the eleven sectors finished higher, led by consumer discretionary at 2.40% and financials at 1.79%.

Among liquid stocks, EVgo rose 44.9%, Newell Brands gained 15% and JetBlue added 11.2%. Intel fell 37.2%, the steepest stock decline of the day, and Compass Pathways lost 27.1%. The causes, like that of the wider technology drop, are not clear in today's coverage. Apple and Palantir report after the close, joined by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Williams Companies, Diamondback Energy and Realty Income. Options coverage described traders as anxious ahead of the Apple and Palantir results.

Against this morning

This morning's brief was labeled Balanced with a score of 51, so it called no direction and the verdict is no_call. There was no call to match or miss. The brief had flagged the Nasdaq leading a selloff and centered attention on Apple and Palantir earnings, and tech weakness carried into today's close.
